How to Sew a Knitting Needle Roll Up
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Whether you are knitting socks or a sweater, there are times when it is necessary to change the knitting needle size in the middle of knitting. It is equally important to be able to locate the specific size needle easily instead of having to search through the bottom of your knitting bag only to find that you left it on the table in the other room. Knitting needles can be costly to replace, and easy to locate by keeping them handy and safe in a neatly arranged needle roll up.
Steps
- Start by cutting two pieces of fabric. One, in the cover fabric, measuring 28" by 26" and the other in the lining fabric, measuring 28" by 18".
- Pin the lining fabric, at 3 edges, to the bottom edge of the cover fabric, so that the extra cover fabric is pointing out of the top.
- Pin a length of ribbon, 18" long, to the fabric so than most of the ribbon is tucked in between the two pieces of fabric, except for an inch sticking out (as shown) and pinned to the edge.
- Sew along the 3 edges, removing the pins as you go, but leaving the top edge (the one along the side with the excess fabric) unstitched.
- Fold this inside out and fold over the excess fabric flap so that its wrong side is facing out. Pin this at the sides.
- Sew the edges of the flap, removing the pins as you go.
- Fold the flap inside out, so that the right face of the fabric is facing out.
- Measure out how big you want the needle pockets to be and mark out the lines with sewing pins.
- Sew down each of these lines, removing the pins as you go.
- Sew another length of ribbon about 8" in from the first.
- Place your needles in, arranging them by thickness.
- Roll it all up and tie the ribbons in a bow.
Tips
- Make a smaller version for crochet hooks to keep track of them.
- If you have many different size needles, you can make two of these just for the larger sized needles, so that the bag would not get weighed down.
- Make these as Christmas gifts for knitter friends.
- This also makes a good holder for artist's paint brushes.
